What Is the Kidner Procedure?

The Kidner Procedure is a foot surgery performed to remove an accessory navicular bone - a small extra bone or piece of cartilage on the inner side of the foot near the arch. This accessory bone can cause pain and inflammation when it rubs against shoes or affects foot function. The procedure also often involves repositioning the posterior tibial tendon to improve foot support and reduce symptoms.

When Is the Kidner Procedure Recommended?

The Kidner Procedure is typically recommended when non-surgical treatments fail. Common indications include:

  • Persistent pain from accessory navicular syndrome
  • Difficulty wearing shoes due to bony prominence
  • Chronic inflammation of the posterior tibial tendon
  • Flatfoot deformity associated with tendon dysfunction
  • Failed conservative care, such as orthotics or physical therapy

How Is the Kidner Procedure Performed?

The surgery involves making a small incision over the accessory navicular. The extra bone is removed, and the posterior tibial tendon is detached and reattached to a more anatomically favorable position on the foot. This improves tendon function and reduces irritation. The procedure may be performed under general or regional anesthesia, typically on an outpatient basis.

Recovery After the Kidner Procedure

Patients are usually placed in a cast or walking boot for 4 to 6 weeks to allow healing. Physical therapy follows to strengthen the tendon and restore foot mobility. Most individuals return to regular activities within 8 to 12 weeks, though full recovery may take longer depending on individual healing rates.

Risks of the Kidner Procedure

While generally safe, the Kidner Procedure carries some risks:

  • Infection
  • Nerve irritation or numbness
  • Incomplete pain relief
  • Scar formation
  • Tendon weakness or re-tear

Benefits of the Kidner Procedure

When successful, this surgery offers several benefits:

  • Relief from chronic foot pain
  • Improved foot alignment and function
  • Better tolerance for footwear
  • Enhanced mobility and activity levels
